Embracing Fresh Fruits and Vegetables for a Healthy Summer

Posted by Staff on June 30, 2023

As the sun graces us with its warmth and Northern California bursts with vibrant colors, there's no better time to explore the abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables available during the summer months. Not only are these seasonal treats delicious, but they also offer a treasure trove of nutrients that can fuel our bodies and support overall well-being.

Let's dive into the world of fresh produce, discover their nutritional benefits, learn where to find them affordably, and explore easy ways to incorporate them into our daily meals.

5 Seasonal Fruits and Vegetables

  1. Juicy Watermelons: With their high water content and refreshing taste, watermelons are perfect for hot summer days. Packed with vitamins A and C, as well as hydrating electrolytes, they promote healthy skin, aid in hydration, and support a robust immune system.
  2. Colorful Berries: Raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries are bursting with antioxidants, fiber, and vitamins. These tiny powerhouses protect against chronic diseases, improve brain health, and promote healthy digestion.
  3. Crisp Cucumbers: Cucumbers are not only cooling but also low in calories and rich in hydration. They provide a refreshing crunch, along with vitamins K and C, potassium, and magnesium, promoting healthy bones and aiding in digestion.
  4. Leafy Greens: Spinach, kale, and Swiss chard thrive in the summer months. These leafy greens are packed with essential nutrients like iron, folate, and vitamins A and K. Incorporating them into your diet can boost energy levels, support brain function, and enhance bone health.
  5. Flavorful Tomatoes: Bursting with lycopene, an antioxidant known for its anti-inflammatory properties, tomatoes are a staple of summer. They are rich in vitamins C and K, promote heart health, and support healthy skin.

Where to Find Affordable Fresh Produce

Fresh fruit and vegetables get a bad reputation for being expensive, however it’s possible to eat healthy on a budget, especially when produce is in season. We also have the added benefit of living in Northern California which means access to so much produce! In our local area there is a diverse variety of fresh fruits and vegetables all year round.

One of the most fun ways to discover fresh fruits and vegetables in season is to explore your local farmers' markets. There you can get the freshest produce at reasonable prices. These community hubs offer a wide variety of fruits and vegetables directly from local farmers. Not only will you enjoy farm-to-table goodness, but you'll also support local growers and the rural economy.

Another local option is to join a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program. In CSA’s you can subscribe to receive a weekly or monthly box of seasonal produce from local farms. This convenient and cost-effective option ensures you'll have a steady supply of fresh fruits and vegetables while also supporting local agriculture.

Even though going to local farms and farmer’s markets can be fun, there is nothing wrong with getting your produce from a grocery store! Keep an eye out for weekly specials and discounts at your local grocery stores. Many establishments offer sales on seasonal produce, making it more affordable for everyone to enjoy the benefits of fresh fruits and vegetables. There are also grocery stores who purchase from local farmers so you can still be supporting local agriculture.
